Abstract
Accurate prediction for snow melting amount is important for water resources in heavy snow regions. However, the quantity of snow melt runoff was estimated less than snow water equivalent after 2008 in Iwaonai dam reservoir, Teshio river basin. The predicted snow melt runoff was smaller than the observed snow melt runoff both in 2008 (66%) and 2009(74%).Focused on these years, the timing of snow melt runoff to the dam lake reservoir tends to be earlier than the 38-year average (climatology), and the daily temperature in mid-March through mid-May also tends to be higher than the climatology. Our results show that about 35% of the underestimation is caused by the snow-evaporation and the snow-melting runoff due to rainfall in 2008 and 47% of the underestimation is caused in 2009.
