Abstract

Atmospheric blocking is one of the most influential phenomena in mid-latitude regions causing heavy rainfall, cold spell, drought. In this study, we defined atmospheric blocking utilizing the theory of energy in jet stream introduced by Rossby (1950), which is based on the analogy between synoptic scale atmosphere and open channel flow. We propose a specific energy equation, which defines the energy state of jet stream more strictly than previous studies, to explain complicated flow such as the meandering jet near the atmospheric blocking.
