The amino acid transporter LAT2 activates the mTORC1 pathway in glomerular epithelial cells, leading to cellular proliferation in advance of observable crescent formation. A LAT2 inhibitor significantly abrogates the progress of the disease, suggesting a pivotal role for LAT2 in the pathogenesis of crescentic glomerulonephritis.
