Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examines the activity of the Viennese conductor Clemens Krauss in the Third Reich and rethinks the musical politics of the Nazis, who used audio media as a central propaganda tool. The main results follow. First, exploring his activity with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, I traced the radio programming of the Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (Reich Broadcasting Corporation) and determined the meaning of its radio concerts. Second, examining the Salzburg Festival 1942, directed by Krauss, and its broadcast in the Third Reich, I showed its uniqueness with regard to this theme, based on unpublished documents. As the Second World War intensified and the situation worsened for the Third Reich, the regime prohibited live transmission of this festival. Instead, radio stations used recordings for their broadcasts, but only after the close of the festival.
